OLAP Functionality in SC Modeler MD

SC Modeler MD is the OLAP-enabled configuration of SC Modeler which allows you to use the OLAP (online analytical processing) technology to perform multidimensional analysis of data produced by the Coverage Analysis module.

SC Modeler MD is capable of generating a relational database which includes specially designed dimension and fact tables. The structure of these tables allows specifying dimensions and hierarchies within the ground and orbital segment. The database serves as a data source for a predefined set of OLAP cubes, allowing to explore a variety of measures including revisit and coverage time, total coverage duration, ground elevation angle, range, range rate, satellite-based azimuth and elevation, azimuth rate, elevation rate, angular rate.

In addition to SC Modeler MD, the system must include the following key components:

- MS Analysis Services analytical server. MS Analysis Services is the toolset that enables the user to create and manage multidimensional OLAP cubes. MS Analysis Services provides multidimensional data in response to client queries.

- The client part of the system can be implemented using a variety of software packages such as MS Reporting Services, MS Excel, ProClarity, Panorama or any other MDX-enabled reporting tool. Each of these packages provides versatile browsing and reporting capabilities. The user can select any measure for any reasonable combination of the dimensions. Also, measures can be presented at various levels of summarization or drilldown. The user can issue a query by manipulating the interface controls, without writing language-based queries.  This can be done by “dragging” a dimension name to a row or column heading in a tabular report, which will automatically recalculate the displayed measures. Each dimension can be used as a row or a column in a report, or as a filter. This provides a practically unlimited set of reports. Users are not limited by predetermined capabilities of the system.

The following introductory example is provided here for the purpose of illustrating multidimensional capabilities of SC Modeler MD.

Analized constellation includes two groups of satellites. Group No.1 includes three satellites in elliptical (1,500 x 14,000 km) orbits and Group No.2 includes two satellites in circular orbits (1,250 km). The ground segment includes two coverage areas each containing 20 points on the Earth's surface.

OLAP Example 1

Data generated by the Coverage Analysis module have been loaded into the MS Analysis Services based OLAP cube, containing two measures, the Average Percent Covered (%) and the Maximum Gap Duration (minutes), and three dimensions, Time, Satellites and Coverage Grid.

The report shown below dispays the selected measures at various levels of granularity. The Coverage Grid dimension is placed on rows. This dimension allows viewing the coverage statistics calculated for each point of the coverage grid as well as aggregated results at the Latitude level, the "Coverage Area" level, and the "All Coverage Areas" level (Grand Total row). The Satellites dimension is placed on columns. This dimension allows viewing the results at the "Satellite" level, "Satellite Group" level, and at "All Satellites" level (Grand Total column). The user can exclude any satellite or group of gridpoints from the report and agregated coverage statistics will be recalculated and displayed immediately.
